Vila Restal is a Delta grade thief and master lockpick, from the planet Earth. After his capture by the Federation, he is sent to the penal planet Cygnus Alpha, where he meets up with the rebel leader Roj Blake and Kerr Avon, an Alpha criminal in for embezzling millions of credits. Together, with several other criminals, they capture a fantastic alien ship and set out to thwart the evil Federation and try to bring peace and justice to the galaxy. Avon constantly attempts to undermine Blake's rule, though does not lead especially well when he does. Vila is often seen as drunk, cowardly and lazy, but he has proven time and again that he is reliable, intelligent and quite useful in a pinch. His clever and witty banter with Avon has been the highlight of the show for many viewers.

Avon and Vila are the longest serving casts member in Blake's 7, with Vila appearing in all 52 of the broadcast episodes, and Avon in all but the first episode. Avon and Vila were considered the series' most popular characters. After the conclusion of the fourth series, a spin-off featuring Avon and Vila was even proposed.
